Hydrophobic membranes for ethanol removal from ethanol-water mixture

Dear Sir,

We want to produce ethanol by membrane bioreactor by pervaporation process. So, we need to permselective membrane to ethanol. After more investigation, we find that zeolite hydrophobic membranes are much useful for this study. According to discussion, highly hydrophobic zeolite membranes, such as silicalite-1, Ge-ZSM-5, and Beta-type have separated various organic compounds from water. For a binary system, ethanol permeated through the zeolite pores, but no water penetrated into the zeolite pores. Water, however, adsorbed on silanol groups along the external surface of the zeolite crystal. These results suggest that structural defects and non-zeolite pores in hydrophobic polycrystalline zeolite membranes increase water transport, and further improvements in organic separations from water may be possible.

Table 1 shows results for ethanol removal from ethanol/water mixtures with various hydrophobic membranes.

The silicalite membrane with these spec are very ideal for us:
Separation factor (alpha) = 86 at fermentation broth having a 5 wt% ethanol concentration at PH = 4 and range temp = 25oC -45oC

In addition, we need three types of hydrophobic polymeric membranes
1 - PTMSP [poly(1-trimethylsily1-1-propyne)] membrane
2 - PDMS [polydimethylsiloxane]
3 - PDMS-PPP graft copolymer [polydimethylsiloxane-poly(1-phenyl-1-propyne)]
We want 2 discs with diameter 14 cm from each membrane.

Sir,

Please advise if pervaporation would work with the following application, quote on the following:

Our client currently uses a vacuum distillation system manufactured by Parker.

Waste oil: Typically 15w 40

Contains water 1-2.5% The water contains : Ethylene-glycol ratios up to 50%/50%

Polypropylene-glycol ratios up to 50%/50%

Normally contamination of water to oil is 1.25% average

Application Flow rate: Oil
Flow rate a= 50 lpm
Flow rate b= 100 lpm

The objective is for the removal of water, from the oil refining package
Some of the water/glycol mix is free water, some is entrained.

The Ethylene glycol and corrosion inhibitor, is used to stop the water freezing in the radiator and cooling system of a car in winter.
It is also used to raise the boiling point of the water in summer.

We theorise this is why it is harder to remove the water from oil, using the vacuum distillation methods, as the temperature ( heating) of the oil needs to be higher in order boil of the water.
The alternative is to use a chemical solution to modify the glycol component, to disable the properties of the glycol.

It is also possible that some of the additives in the oil that assist the viscosity stabilisation could also be blinding the elements in the exiting system.

With clean water in mother oil you achieve down to 0.2 % water content in oil
With Glycol effected water in mother oil you can only achieve down to 0.8% of water content in oil.
